Zacharie just discovered he has a tongue. He won’t keep it in his mouth.

Zacharie turns 9 months old today. Yesterday we went to the doc (Dr Smillie - how cool a name is that?!) to get his measurements and check up done.

We also wanted some extra stuff done as we get ready to head off to France in 3 weeks. Woah, already?

So the stats are: 74cm long, and 9.33kg. He’s grown 20cm and almost tripled his weight since birth. That puts him in the 75th percentile for height, and 50th for weight - a nice tall, lean boy. Perfect!

He LOVES to stand. We’ve been having him stand since he was born, always balancing him that way, and now that he’s been crawling for about a week and a half, he’s wanting to move to the next step. That means pulling himself up on anything he can find.

He likes to play peek a boo. He’ll pull a blanket or cloth over his face for a second, we’ll do a “Where’s Zacharie?” and then he pulls it down with a big smile, only to put it back up seconds later. This can go on a couple dozen times.

He’s very chatty. Ba Ba Ba Ba or Ma Ma Ma Ma are the sounds he makes, oh along with growling and grunting when he can’t get his way. We’re trying sign language, and he can make the sign for milk, and we think it’s in context, although part of it is just a movement he likes to make with his hand.

My pal Meg likes to make lists. This morning, as I was playing with Z, I was reminded of some of his favorite things, so I threw them together in a list.

richard scarry poster - buzzbishop.comRichard Scarry Busytown poster - I sit in the chair with him standing on my lap and he climbs my chest to stand on my shoulders and face to get a better view - when he gets to the top, he flaps his arms and coos in glee. The best part? The poster is Jen’s from when she was a kid that we had reframed.

Trucks - He loves them. Garbage day is the best in his world

Apple Mango Tango - He has it for breakfast, a couple cubes of apple, one of mango and he’s off

Ikea Sparka Soccer Ball - This is, quite possibly, the GREATEST children’s toy ever created. It’s a super super soft soccer ball that is machine washable. We can throw it back and forth, he can chew on it and it is his favourite toy. Bar none.

Eating things - He’s teething, so everything goes in his mouth

Silvery fish - He loves standing at the windows of the Aquarium waving as the salmon swim past

Books by Sandra Boynton or Olivier Dunrea - He loves the ones about Hippos and Gertie

So it snowed this morning. Lots of it too.

The schools are closed and people aren’t showing up to work and meetings are getting cancelled.

I arrived at the station 20 mins ahead of a scheduled meeting to find it cancelled. The out of town visitor was petrified to drive from downtown to Richmond and nixed it.

My ride in wasn’t that bad. The conditions really aren’t that nasty today, as confirmed by an email from Grouse Mountain encouraging people to spend the day off school up on the mountain skiing.

Wait a second. Your children can’t get the 5 blocks to the local elementary school safely, but you can haul the whole family up to the North Shore to carve up a few turns? Sounds a little suspicious to me.

The truth be told, on days like today the roads suck for a couple of hours and then it’s no big deal. The plows get the work done, the traffic finishes off the job, driving the salt into the snow. By the time I got on my way at noon, I had one of the shortest commutes ever. No worries whatsoever.

Last year there was a spooky ass ride home because it was iced up like nobody’s business. Took me 2+ hrs to get home. I even picked up a woman who was so scared she pulled over on Hwy 91 and just opened my passenger door and got in. She didnt speak much english, she was just so scared about the conditions she had more confidence placing her safety in the charge of a total stranger than weathering it alone.

Those days are few and far between in Vancouver. Today was not one of those days.

I would venture to say the mountains were a little busier than normal too. It wasnt that bad, yes the sidewalks weren’t shoveled and we got a little wet when we went for our walk today, but we still troddled around, the kids could have made it to campus too. Besides, the best part about being at school when it snows, is recess!

It’s the All Star Break in the NHL, no games tonight.

But, in the dreams of one little boy, wearing a hockey team’s pj’s to bed for the first time, the Canucks are playing for the Cup.
