easter island marathonWe are now into the countdown. This past weekend the 2008 edition of the Easter Island Marathon went down, and in one year, I will be there with Team Diabetes.

So far I haven’t been able to nail down this year’s results but I did manage to dig up the 2007 finishing times, and this Chilean news story about the 2007 event.

While I’m there I might also offer up my services in web design. The official home of the race is a little, um, well, … broken.

“We had a strong response from the islanders and mainland Chile in this past years,” said Race Director Rodrigo Salas. “The last six years we welcomed runners from around the world.”

You can be a part of the Team Diabetes effort, by signing on to run with 95Crave Team Diabetes Disney World, or by making a donation towards Team Diabetes Easter Island.

This is excellent news, gang.

Already I’m on board, raising funds for Team Diabetes Easter Island (almost 25% towards the $10 000 goal), now I’ve agreed to lead another team, this time to Disney World in January.

95craveI couldn’t do both on my own. I approached 95 Crave about becoming officially involved, and since registratiom for Team Diabetes Easter Island is all but full, we’ve partnered on another destination - Disney World in January 09!

We have some big plans to support this cause, and you’ll start hearing the campaign recruitment on 95Crave very soon.

In the meantime, it’s a chance for you to get on board and commit. Here’s what you need to know.

The fund raising commitment is $4 500. You’ll have benchmarks and budgets to hit along the way, along with tons of training support. Your flight and accomodation is covered for the trip, you just have to spread the word, fill up the donation boxes, and get your heart and lungs up for the distance.

In June 09 with Team Diabetes Easter Island I will be doing the full marathon, in January at Team Diabetes Disney World, I will just be doing the half marathon - but feel free to run the full, or the full and a half! (Seriously, they have this thing called the Goofy Challenge where you do a Half marathon on Day 1 and a Full Marathon on Day 2 - no thanks!)

It’s a great cause, it’s a great event, it’s a great way for you to make a positive change with your own lifestyle while at the same time raising funds and awareness for Team Diabetes.

If you want in, contact Rebecca Taylor with Team Diabetes. I look forward to supporting you in your fund raising and training efforts.

Catching Sunshine 2
Vitamin D, most commonly absorbed into the body from sunlight, is being linked to preventing Type 1 Diabetes.

The University of San Diego is the source of the study, and found children from higher latitudes (Canada) have a higher incidence of Type 1 Diabetes.

the incidence of diabetes tends to be low at or near the equator, where the rate often approaches zero, and then rises steadily at progressively higher latitudes, reaching peaks in places like Canada, Finland and southern Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego [source]

“The research suggests that childhood type 1 diabetes may be preventable with a modest intake of vitamin D3 (1,000 IU/day), ideally with five to 10 minutes of sunlight around noontime, when good weather allows,” Garland said.

“Infants less than a year old should not be given more than 400 IU per day without consulting a doctor. Hats and dark glasses are a good idea to wear when in the sun at any age, and can be used if the child will tolerate them,” he advised. [source]

We were encouraged to give Vitamin D supplements to Z as an infant, since you can’t really put a newborns fresh and fragile skin in open sunlight. Continuing to give him the supplements, especially in this lame June weather, is something Jen and I are going to discuss.

The amounts of Vitamin D you should supplement is being debated.

The amounts of vitamin D that Dr. Garland suggests are far higher than what Health Canada recommends - 400 IU a day for breast-fed infants under 1 and 200 IU for older children. Health Canada’s maximum safe dose is 1,000 IU a day for those younger than 1 and 2,000 for those older, although the government agency said last month that it intends to review its recommendations in light of new research linking insufficiency of the vitamin to a number of diseases.

Health Canada said in an e-mail response to questions from The Globe that it recommends Canadians follow its existing doses pending the outcome of the review.

The Canadian Diabetes Association has been financing research into vitamin D, including a study by Dr. Taback that gave infants 400 IU or 2,000 IU daily to see whether there were any adverse effects. [source]

That research is one of the things you can support by donating to Team Diabetes. Can you imagine that something as simple as sunshine and a vitamin supplement could cure / prevent Juvenile Diabetes? It’s truly remarkable.

diabetologia If you want all the scientific speak, check out the medical journal, Diabetologia.

This is the second time this week Vitamin D has been hailed as a magic cure all.

On Tuesday, The University of Toronto released information saying Vitamin D helped in protecting against breast cancer.

Last week came reports a lack of Vitamin D has also been linked to osteoporosis in adults.

So get outside and soak up some sun. You know, once it starts shining.

indiana jones crystal skullThe Canadian Diabetes Association is all about spreading the word and helping those living with Diabetes learn as much as they can about the latest innovations and support systems in place to help them battle the disease.

Earlier this spring there was a Live Smart Expo where patients could meet with dieticians, manufacturers, retailers, therapists, doctors and other people living with Diabetes to better understand their path through life with this disease along for the ride.

This week, 2 more events will be happening, and they involve a screening of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Cool!

The Movie Night is jointly hosted by Canada Safeway and Accu-Chek, and will start with a meet and greet between participating suppliers (Safeway, Roche, BD, Disetronic, Canadian Diabetes Association) and guests for around 45 minutes prior to the movie.

Admission is only $10 and includes a regular pop and popcorn as well as a gift for a total value of $25. Tickets are available from area Safeway pharmacies.

I’ve been doing well (so far) with my push to the Easter Island Marathon in June 09 with Team Diabetes. I have committed to raising $10 000 for the cause, and I’m already 25% of the way there in just a few months.

I’ve been blogging about the event, and if you check out Google for Team Diabetes Easter Island, this blog is popping near the top of many searches.

disneyworldThat’s caught the eye of the promo team, and they’ve asked if I would lead a team of 20 from Vancouver to the Walt Disney World Marathon in January of 09.

Soooo .. before I commit, I’d like to know what kind of team I can get together.

The commitment is $4500 to raise in 6 months. In return you’ll get all the training you need to run a full or half marathon, plus airfare and accomodations. If we can fill the team, that will be nealry $100 000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Huge.

Who wants in?

team diabetes easter island buzz bishop freelancing for charity

DONATED: $2 330
GOAL: $10 000
REMAINING: $7 670

A couple cheques just landed in my lap and immediately went in to the Team Diabetes donation jar.

The big one is for a voice session I did for Western Financial, the smaller one is for the Links for a Cause in my sidebar courtesy of TextLinkAds. Next month I’ll be getting a cheque for my Google AdSense that I run with each post.

I’ve committed to Freelancing for Charity as I get ready for the Easter Island Marathon in June 09 with Team Diabetes. I need to get to $10 000 and these latest cheques will nearly double the fund raising efforts.

If you have need for an emcee, spokesperson, voice talent or anything along those lines, I’d appreciate you hiring me. I will do the work for you in exchange for a donation of the usual fees to my Team Diabetes jar. You get a professional product AND a tax receipt, I get closer to my goal.

This week, now that Z has started daycare, I’ve had some time to start running again. I’ve been lazy. I’m only running about 3k and huffing and puffing the whole way - a far cry from the 42k I will do in a year.

Team Diabetes sets out fundraising benchmarks to hit as you get ready for a marathon. My first one is for $2500 in October, I’m well on my way to making that milestone!

The Vancouver Marathon had 13 000+ people weaving their way through 42k of Vancouver streets this weekend, and among the bobbing heads and shuffling feet were more than a few members of Team Diabetes.

While I’m getting ready to run the Easter Island Marathon in June 09, there are marathons every couple of months around the world that feature dozens of Team Diabetes members.

Rio, Honolulu, Reykjavik, Vancouver…

Watching the news highlights today I threw myself on my annual guilt trip for not being in enough shape to even participate in the half marathon. It’s been 5 years since I ran in the Vancouver Marathon.

8 weeks later I ran a second one in Iceland, and in between I hiked 42km up the Inca Trail to Machu Piccu. 2003 was a very active year. 2008? Not so much. But that will change. The plans are set for next June and I know next May I will at least run the half, maybe even the full.

What about you? Were you inspired seeing these people from all walks of life accomplish one of those 43 things on pretty much everyone’s life list? Do you wanna do it?

Team Diabetes can help. You’ll be off to do your marathon in an exotic world city, you’ll have an entire organization supporting you and helping you with training, and you’ll be raising money and awareness for diabetes. Actually, just by training for the marathon you’ll be fighting diabetes. A healthy lifestyle is the best defense and marathon training demands you live on the right side of the line.

So… who’s in for a marathon? Maybe a half? What about a 10k or inline skate? Here are some upcoming events and Team Diabetes entry deadlines:

Honolulu - Registration Deadline: June 27, 2008
Marathon Date: December 14, 2008
Distances Available: Full Marathon and 10km Race Day Run/Walk
Travel Dates: Participants depart Canada on December 11th and return on December 16th.

Prague - Registration deadline: October 10, 2008
Marathon Date: Early May 2009
Distances Available: Full Marathon, & 10K In-line Skate

Easter Island - Registration deadline: August 8, 2008
Marathon Date: June 2009
Distances Available: Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k

Gold Coast (Australia) - Registration deadline: October 24, 2008
Marathon Date: Early July 2009
Distances Available: Full and Half Marathon, 10K

If you’re still not convinced, but want to support the cause, throw some of your tax refund at my Team Diabetes Easter Island push. You’ll pick up a tax receipt for next year’s return, and you’ll help millions in their fight with diabetes.

DONATED: $1 180
GOAL: $10 000
REMAINING: $8 820

I have committed to donating all my freelance income to the Team Diabetes Easter Island effort. So far that includes a voice over session ($1000 payment pending), an iTunes endorsement ($600) and any monies I make from this website.

See those little links on the right hand side? The ones that say “Links for a Cause”? Those are TextLink Ads and I’ve been running them for a couple months, enough to get a little bit of a cheque.

Toss $44.76 into the Team Diabetes coffers. Actually, I’ll round it up to $50 to keep the accounting easy.

Are you trying to find a way to scratch up some money to donate? Why not serve up some of your site’s traffic money to the cause? Or maybe break off a piece of your tax refund?

Or, you could just hire me to do your media work. You’ll get a professional product, a mention on the blog ;) and a tax receipt for supporting Team Diabetes.

It’s tax season. I know. I just got a letter from Revenue Canada asking for my 2006 return. And while I’m at it, could I give them 2004, 2005 and 2007?

Yeah, I’m lazy. But I don’t think you are. You do it every year. You save every receipt and you get a big fat refund every spring.

I’ve been rolling around in my head different ways for you to pitch in and help out with Team Diabetes without really asking you to dig deep into your pockets.

Then I saw a posting by Airdrie on the weekend. She got her tax refund and immediately broke off a piece for the Balding For Dollars campaign.

While I know I should put all the money into my credit card debt, I decided to donate part of it to the Children’s Hospital ‘Balding for Dollars‘ fund-raiser, taking place next week. A team of teachers and students at my school are shaving their heads on Wednesday as part of a Province-wide event to raise money for children with cancer and blood disorders. [source]

team diabetes easter island - buzzbishop.comBrilliant.

It was free money to Airdrie, it’s now free money for the charity and Airdrie gets a tax receipt to get a head start on next year’s return.

That’s what I call paying it forward.

So now comes my turn to ask.. you’re going to get your refund soon, if you haven’t gotten it already. When you do, break off a piece for Team Diabetes. My personal goal is to raise $10 000 and you (and the Finance Minister) can be a part of it.

Please?

DONATED: $1 130
GOAL: $10 000
REMAINING: $8 870

Tomorrow morning, 56 000+ people will run the Vancouver Sun Run.

In June, 2009, I will be 1 of 150 running the Easter Island Marathon.

I just got back from the LiveSmart Expo where a few hundred people gathered to learn more about Diabetes and sit down with experts to talk about their situation. I had a GREAT chat with Rebecca Taylor, our contact for Team Diabetes.

When she said 150 people were running on Easter Island, I assumed she was talking about Team Diabetes. No. She was talking about the WHOLE MARATHON.

Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is a small, remote place. If they had more entries available, the island’s resources wouldn’t be able to keep up, so registration is limited to … 150.

I just might win this thing ;)
