Okay, so Jen and I are rocking and rolling along with our LA Weight Loss plan, but here come the rapids - holiday feasts.

Thanksgiving is this weekend, and while a splurge here or there will not throw anyone off the wagon completely, they can disrupt your routine and schedule and re introduce bad habits.

We’re not going to be party poopers, but here’s a couple of easy, common sense hints to eat healthy at Thanksgiving.
4 Thanksgiving Turkeys by Mother and Son!
      - choose white meat
      - avoid the potatoes, stuffing and gravy
      - go easy on the booze
      - no whip on your pumpkin pie

Steering away from the fats and starches will help you keep the diet on balance, and loading your plate with salad, veggies and turkey breast meat shouldnt be a problem.

All healthy eating is plain common sense. For Jen and I, working within the LA Weight Loss program keeps us on track and takes the thinking out of meal planning. We’ll be following these easy steps this weekend and keeping on towards our goals (which are just 1 month away!)

You can still get on with the program and drop all the weight you need before Christmas .. call 310-LOSE to get started with your own personal weight loss coach today.

When Kyle Wellwood reported to Canucks training camp earlier this month he tipped the scales near 200lbs and wasn’t in NHL shape, according to coach Alain Vigneault.

TorqueThe Canucks had signed him to a nearly $1M deal in the off-season and were hoping to have the ex-Leaf regain his 30 goal scoring touch on a line with Pavol Demitra and Mason Raymond. Unsatisfied with Wellwood’s weight, the Canucks put him on a strict diet.

In 10 days he’s dropped 8 pounds and some of the way he’s doing it are exactly the reason I’ve been dropping weight with LA Weight Loss. When you give your diet over to someone who knows what they’re doing, you just follow the rules and things will be okay.

“They’ve taken all the thinking out of it,” he says “They’re making sure I get the meals I need. I’ve eliminated everything but lean meat and vegetables. If you want to lose weight pretty quickly, just do that.” [Vancouver Sun]

That’s what LA Weight Loss has done for Jennifer and I - it’s taken all the thinking out of things. We know each day how many proteins, fruit, vegetable, dairy, fat and starches we need to eat. We plan our meals out the night before or morning of, and we’re not scrambling at a fast food drive through or ordering a pizza at 7p because we have no dinner planned.

When you’re on a program, you’re bound by the programs rules and it adds a convenient and easy structure to how and what you eat. Follow it, and you’ll drop the lbs - just like Kyle Wellwood did.

Hmmm .. I’m around 197 now .. I wonder if I get down to 189 by next weekend if Coach will sign me to a $1M deal?

Jen and I had a little bet as we hustle through our LA Weight Loss Program: the first one to have their bedtime weight flip over to a new set of numbers would get to have gooey chocolate cake for dessert.

Gooey Chocolate Cakes

“Gooey chocolate cake” is a phrase Jen uses a lot. It’s something she craved during pregnancy, and something that in our pre-LAWL days I would be ushered out to get late at night. Now, it’s no longer part of our diet, but we made the bet as a bit of a reward to each other.

The goal is to have our weight “flip over” at night, you know, like moving from 200 - 199.

Every 10 pounds you get a treat. Sure, I’ve had my morning weight hit 196 before, but up until last night, I couldnt get my bedtime weight to roll over.

Well last night’s weigh in was pretty awesome. We both rocked it about a pound under our goals.

Guess who’s having dessert with dinner tonight? BOTH OF US!

That was a tweet I got from Fiona Forbes yesterday.

I’m guessing Fiona is asking because LA Weight Loss is a sponsor of my Team Diabetes Easter Island effort. So, yes, I’m being “paid” to represent the company - but here’s the deal, if it was only kinda working, I’d tell you about it, but I wouldn’t be so evangelical. I would fulfill my requirement to spread the word, but I am going out of my way to preach because, honestly and truly, I am marvelling at this system.

I don’t know if I should call it a system, it’s really just learning how to balance your meals throughout the day. Simple lessons, really. Eat lots of little meals, have protein with each one, drink a ton of water. I’ve cut out sugar, pasta, rice and potatoes - that’s pretty much it.

LA Weight Loss supplements the cravings with great snacks called LA Lites. They’re similar to protein bars you’d get and they really knock that chocolate lust I get each day right out of the park.

I have been tweeting a little exuberantly about it, because for the first time in a long time, the digits on my scale and flipped from 2… to 1…. When I was at my heaviest this spring, I tipped in near 215. This weekend I rolled it to 199. Have a look at the number I dialed up on my scale this morning:

Well aren’t we an active bunch of social media twitter stars?

Tanya (@netchick) is starting to get serious about her training for the Team Diabetes Disney World run coming up in January.

Rebecca (@miss604) has been pumping iron down at Fitness World.

Geoff Livingston (@geoffliving) has been tweeting his fitness updates with the hashtag #twit2fit.

I’m also on board the fitness train, with a program from LA Weight Loss. I’ve been at it for 2 weeks, have dropped about 4 pounds. Not earthshaking, but it feels great to move a notch on the belt, and my running has been a lot easier and is improving.

Geoff is the only one officially using the #twit2fit hashtag with his posts. It’s part of a movement started by @JasonFalls back in May to get twitterers off the net and into the gym.

twit2fitI don’t need 50 people to inspire me. I just need 28 of the folks who think my random brain smatterings are worthwhile enough to click, “Follow.” So today I’m hoping anyone wishing to improve their health, be it through fitness or diet or both, will join me in a Twitter experiment.

I’m calling it Twit2Fit - using Twitter to support and inspire one another to improve our wellness, whether it be through diet, exercise or even spiritual health. Let’s use one another as a check point to keep everyone focused on their goals.
[social media explorer]

It’s good to see everyone getting up off the chair, pushing away from the keyboard and taking control of their lifestyle.

If you need a little help, a little nudge, let me share with you the big secret I’ve discovered so far with LA Weight Loss: eat little meals throughout the day, make sure each one has some protein.

That’s how my meals are balanced out. I have a food diary and each day I have 3 proteins, 3 fruits, 4 vegetables, 4 starch, 2 dairy and 2 fat. I sit down over breakfast, usually scrambled eggs and toast, and budget out my meals across the day.

I’ll have an LA Lite bar (similar to a protein bar) and piece of fruit mid morning. A tuna sandwich, some carrots and celery and a yogurt for lunch. Another bar and maybe some crackers mid afternoon. Then it’s bbq’d chicken with 2 veg for dinner, a yogurt and some graham crackers for dessert. BRILLIANT!

Sounds like a full day of food, and it is. But the key is constantly refueling throughout the day.

I know I just told you the secret, but the gang at LA Weight Loss have been instrumental in getting Jen and I on track to our goals. They call themselves personal weight loss coaches, and they truly are.

Yes, LA Weight Loss costs money. But with the food diary, I’m making sure I buy groceries I will eat. I don’t throw food out anymore, and since Jen and I plan out our meals, we’re not scrambling at the last second and ordering pizza. Honestly? It’s a break even proposition. The money you spend on fast food and thrown out food, would equal what you pay to get on board with LA Weight Loss.

Give ‘em a call and see for yourself, no area code needed, 310-LOSE and join the Techcouver crowd getting fit this fall!

Red in the BlueFlipping the page on a new calendar seems as good a reason as any to make life changes and resolutions, but I find this time of year to be even better at making positive changes in life.

Summer has ended, our time of leisure is over and we’re all refocussing on work. The seasons are in flux and our wardrobe is getting spiced up with new fall colours and textures. There is a real sense of change in the air.

New Year’s comes on the end of a rather rambunctious holiday season, the weather is still damp and dreary, and while you’re in party recovery mode, the inspiration for change isn’t all around you.

So I like fall as a time to make resolutions and put positive change in to motion.

LA Weight Loss is part of that change for me. Jennifer and I have been sticking to the plan set out by our personal weight loss coaches. It’s easy, we have a set number of proteins, starches, fruits, veg, dairy and fats to eat each day. Usually it’s a protein at each meal, a fruit at each meal, veg as snacks throughout the day and at dinner. Simple.

It’s all about rethinking the way we eat. We’ve brought our portion sizes back in line, and because we’re grazing every 2 hours or so throughout the day, we’re less hungry. Even though we’re eating more, we’re retraining our body’s metabolism to burn calories all day instead of just churning them up at meal time.

If the bite in the air or flocking leaves is inspiring you to change, call 310-LOSE and try LA Weight Loss. It’s easy, and it works.

The phone number for LA Weight Loss is 310 LOSE.

I was voicing the commercials this week and immediately made the number 604-310-LOSE in accordance with the 10 digit dialing we’ve had in Metro Vancouver for a few years now.

Then I was told we didnt need area codes with 310. Weird. Go ahead, try it .. dial 310-LOSE and see what happens… you get through! Try not dialing the area code with any other number and you get that friendly recorded voice.

It’s not unique to LA Weight Loss, the entire 310 exchange is area code-less. 310-1010 and 310-0001 are pizza numbers. 310-TAXI will get you a cab, and they’re free local calls wherever you are in Canada, no area code needed.

Seven-digit phone numbers beginning with 310 (e.g. 310-7890) will still exist under the 10-digit system. These are generally for businesses or government services. 310- numbers are toll-free. [source]

Cool.

I’m now into the heart of my LA Weight Loss adventures. After a couple of meetings with Dee at the North Vancouver location, and 2 days of the Quick Launch, I’m on my own to do proper meal balancing, planning and portioning.

The Quick Launch consists of 2 days of lots of water, protein, green vegetables and LA’s Quick Launch fruit juice. Dee says it’s all geared towards increasing my metabolism. I’ve been eating shrimp omelettes, half chickens, sashimi, tuna salad and entire cucumbers for the past 2 days. Despite the absence of sugar, carbs and salt, I gained 3 lbs.

That’s okay, says Dee. “We’ve got to Eat More to Lose More.” That’s what LA Weight Loss is about. Eating more of the right foods, in the right portion sizes to get you to your target weight.

The two meetings I’ve had with Dee are all about figuring out my eating habits, my lifestyle and planning out my eating schedule. At my first weigh-in I tipped at 207.4 lbs, Dee and I set out a target of 180 lbs, a loss of 27.4lbs which Dee says I can accomplish in 12 weeks - our target goal date is November 15. My jaw dropped.

I know I will be training for my Team Diabetes Disney World half marathon, but every other time I’ve done hard training, I’ve gained weight. After a 20k run, I’ll just sit on the couch and eat the rest of the day. Dee promises the training will be different this time.

So after the initial Quick Launch, I was loaded up with some LA approved snacks like biscotti, cheese curls, chocolate bars, and cookies. Dee and I planned out a my daily menu routine that will include a healthy mix of protein, fat, carbs and veg.

Here’s what I get to eat today:

breakfast:
2 poached eggs, 2 slices toast, 2 slices tomato, banana
snack:
la lite bar
lunch:
tuna sandwich with tomato, mayo, cheese, yogurt
snack:
la lite bar
dinner:
cod, asparagus, broccoli, pear
bedtime:
biscotti

Not a bad little opening day of food. Already my breakfast filled me up beyond belief. Since LA Weight Loss is all about using your own food, they’ve sent me home with a scale to properly weigh out the portions, and a portion plate.

La weight loss

Jen is most excited about the plate since it will segment her dinner so they don’t touch (she hates it when carrots touch beans, or chicken juice runs into the rice). I like the idea that you just fill up your portion plate with each type of food and you know you’re getting the right amount of each item.

So far things are easy as pie (except the gaining 3lbs part) but I trust Dee and her Eat More to Lose More plan.
