Yesterday was huge. 95Crave had 25 Madonnabe’s in a 12 hour dance-a-thon at Coquitlam Centre to win tickets to Madonna’s first ever Vancouver concert and $10 000 cash.

Everyone was geting down to the tunes that were cranked to 11 in the mall atrium. Even Z.

Z had a great afternoon, he even tried to take the mic from me.

2008-10-18 aquarium Vancouver’s favourite family places are all decorated up for the season. You’ve got Fright Nights at the PNE, The Ghost Train in Stanley Park, The Great Big Boo at different places around town, The Haunted Trolley Tours from the Vancouver Museum and Halloween Hoopla at the Burnaby Village Museum.

Last weekend we checked out World of the Weird at the Vancouver Aquarium.

World of the Weird runs on the weekends, with a spooky hallway all decorated up in the bowels of the Aquarium, along with special creepy crawly gross and ghouly stations throughout the facility.

Here’s what they have to scare the pants right off ya:

1. HAUNTED HALLWAY TOUR – Explore the inky bowels of the Aquarium and prepare for a STARTLING view of what really goes on behind the scenes.

2. HANG WITH OUR BATS – A fun little game similar to TV’s “Jeopardy!” educates you on the wonders of BATS and dispels common myths.

3. PICK YOUR POISON – Learn to distinguish between VENOM & POISON (no, we’re not talking about 80’s recording artists Venom and Poison)

2008-10-18 aquarium (4) 4. FRIGHT FACTOR – Chow down on a cheddar flavoured meal worm or a salt ‘n vinegar flavoured cricket. If you have the GUTS, that is…

5. CREEPY CAMOUFLAGE – Learn how OCEAN PREDATORS use camouflage to “sneak up” on prey … and you just might fall prey yourself, as you learn!

The haunted hallway was a little too old for Z. He didnt really notice anything was going on, except that it was dark. He actually didnt get scared. He did, however, totally dig in to the cheddar flavoured meal worm. Yup. My son ate a maggot.

Check out the Vancouver Aquarium website for info about World of the Weird, and be watching tomorrow for the official announcement of the baby beluga’s name!

perogy supperEver since I was a little kid I’ve loved perogies. I didnt really know what they were, but I liked them because of a little skit from Sesame Street where they toured a perogy factory and sang a goofy little song.

“Pe-e-e-e-ro-gies, pe-e-e-e-e-ro-gies, pe-e-e-e-ro-gies, pe-e-e-e-ro-gieeeeees!”

Fast forward to my adult life and I’m engaged to a Ukranian girl who loves her some perogies, cabbage rolls and borscht. A few weeks back I heard about Perogy Suppers they have every week across Metro Vancouver and hit up the web to find the schedule.

Each week, a different Ukranian Orthodox Church serves up down home cooking for a Friday night. The most famous is the First Friday Perogy Supper in Vancouver at 154 E. 10th [google map]. The line up starts early and the food is gone quickly. Some 8 000 perogies in 3 hours.

Here’s part of the menu:

#1. BORSCH (served with rye bread) - $3.00

#2. REGULAR DINNER - $11.00
* 6 Pyrohy
* 2 Cabbage Rolls
* Sauerkraut or Salad
* Ukrainian Sausage
* Coffee

#3. VEGETARIAN DINNER - $11.00
* 6 Pyrohy
* 3 Cabbage Rolls
* Sauerkraut or Salad
* Coffee

#4. SUPER DINNER - $14.00
* 10 Pyrohy
* 4 Cabbage Rolls
* Sauerkraut or Salad
* Ukrainian Sausage
* Coffee

Yes, we’re doing LA Weight Loss.. but it can take a night off for a good old fashioned Perogy Supper!

Be sure to check out the complete Vancouver Wedding on a Budget series of posts.

It’s not about the wedding, it’s about the marriage. I proved that the first time. Now, as I get ready to walk down the aisle a second time, I’m steadfast against making the same mistake. I would rather invest in the marriage than the wedding.

rich bride poor brideJen and I have fun on the weekends watching Rich Bride, Poor Bride on Slice. Bridezillas pouting because they want $200 tiaras, grooms needing flashy Ferraris, surrounded 250 people they don’t even know guzzling signature cocktails and grazing the midnight buffet.

One couple last night had 2 budgets. He wanted $25k, she wanted $45k. They settled on $38 000 and spent in excess of $52 000. On one night, perhaps 8 hours, of fun. It’s insane.

So as Jen and I plan our wedding, we’re trying to do things reasonably. To that end Jen has been scouring Craigslist for wedding dresses. There are some bargains to be had, but most dresses run about $600 and then need about $300 in alterations and even more for your accessories. Plus you get someone else’s ju-ju. Jen is big on the ju-ju. She wants everything fresh and new with clean karma. I was surprised she was willing to look through Craigslist.

What do you think? Guys rent tuxes, would you wear a rented gown, or buy a used one?

In the end, after trying on dresses at just 2 stores, but scouring the web and magazines for weeks, Jen has picked her dress - and it’s a steal. She gave herself a budget of $1000, but has managed to get it all for less than $500.

Angeline Bridal Boutique on Hastings near Boundary makes their own dresses. They sell them to other stores who mark them up. Buying here means buying direct, means no middle person, means Jen got a perfectly stunning simple dress for a great price and no ju-ju.

We’re trying to do the entire wedding for less than $7 000. We’re paying for it, and I’d like to have a honeymoon in Tahiti (which could cost $7 000 itself), so let’s see how we’re doing.

BUDGET: $7 000
garments: $500

20008-04-01 france (74)Next up is the invitations. I wouldnt mind doing them myself, I’ve got a fab picture of the Eiffel Tower from the day we got engaged. Just looking for ideas to get the wedding script down the right side.

Where did you get your invites done? Who has good ideas on how to do them inexpensively?

October 31 isnt for another 6 weeks, but Old Navy already has their stock of kids Halloween costumes in store. Actually, they’ve had them for more than 2 weeks already. If you have a young un who will be doing the trick-or-treating, you’d better head down and pick your costume quick - they’re going fast.

My mom used to make Halloween costumes for us when we were kids. She spend hours at the sewing machine using patterns to make princess, spaceman and vampire costumes for my brother, sister and I. Now, in this disposable generation, it’s much easier to buy the costume for $30 at Old Navy, wear it for the 30 minute trip around the block, and then flip it on Craigslist for $25 the next year.

Here are some of the costumes we’ve trucked Le Grand Monsieur through, tomorrow we hit Old Navy down south to make our final purchase.

When I was playing hockey I would pretend I was Ken Dryden, Vladislav Tretiak or Richard Brodeur. Those were the heroes of my day. I would skate corner to corner at the whistle, I would rest my chin on the butt of my stick, and I would just be a stone cold brick wall in the net.

When I played baseball I crouched low in the back corner of the box, pretending I was Pete Rose.

When I ran around the field at recess, I did it with a hop and a skip. Just like Terry Fox.

That’s how you can measure the impact of a sports hero - when the kids immitate their moves. Fans of Wayne Gretzky tuck in one side of their jersey, fans of Terry Fox ran with a hop and a skip.

It’s been nearly 30 years since Terry ended his Marathon of Hope just outside Thunder Bay, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres. That’s nearly a marathon a day - on one leg.

Terry Fox Monument (Oblique)

Tomorrow is the Terry Fox Run. It’s not a fancy run with timing chips, and tshirts, and registration forms. It’s a community run. Just show up. Put your name down. Drop some coins in a can and go out and do 2.5k, 5k, or 10k.

Need some inspiration to get up off the couch, and get down to your local run? Have a listen to these words spoken as Terry was forced to abandon.

Audio from the CBC archives - a brilliant place to search for more news footage and interviews with Terry as he started, and eventually stopped his Marathon of Hope.

Now that I’ve turned the page on my 15th anniversary in the city, I’m going to be digging in to my big box of tapes every week and digging out an old interview from the past to share with you.

It’s something I learned from Red Robinson. When I started back at Z, he was at CISL and he would play tapes of him with Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and the kings of rock. It was then that I realized I was going to interview my generations greatest stars through my own career - so I started taping each interview and archiving everything.

Janet Jackson is, without a doubt, one of the most fun interviews I have ever had. As Janet gets ready to take to the stage at GM Place tonight, let’s go back to August 1998 when she was out on the Velvet Rope tour.

The Rock Witchu adventure is a greatest hits tour. Janet set up a phone number, 1-323-622-8139, where fans could dial in and get their favourite track added to the set list.

Here’s hoping she plays yours tonight.

The Backstreet Boys may be a quartet, not a quintet, but that doesn’t matter… they’re back out on the road and swing in to Vancouver for shows tonight and tomorrow at GM Place.

Back in 2001, I was a co-host of the Z Morning Crew alongside Erin Davis, Darren B Lamb and Tarajean. It was just a few days after 9/11 and we had an interview scheduled with Nick Carter to promote the Boys’ Black and Blue Tour.

The events of September 11 affected everyone deeply, but the BSB were especially touched as one of their crew members was aboard one of the flights from Boston.

Here’s the emotional interview with Nick Carter.

Oasis brings their act of brotherly love to GM Place tonight. Ahhh, but remember the late 90s? When they were relevant?

One of the most infamous concerts to hit the Pacific Coliseum was one by Oasis on April 10, 1996. After being pelted by shoes and coins during the opening numbers, Noel opened up on the crowd screaming “We’re not a bunch of f*cking monkeys! We’re the best band in the f*cking world!” before storming off the stage with his band, never to return.

Here’s what the local interwebs had to say about the blow up.

Oasis did not walk off the stage because some shoes and clothing were thrown at them — or, at least that, isn’t the major reason why they left. Rather, it seems that a few disturbed and moronic individuals found it funny to throw coins at the band, hitting guitarist Noel Gallagher in the eye at one point.

I have not been to many big shows where shoes or other pieces of clothing were not tossed up on stage, so, big deal. I don’t condone it, but it was to be expected. Coins, however, are a totally different matter altogether, and I don’t for a second blame Oasis for stopping the show. [dropd]

Just short of a year later, they came back to try it again, and I interviewed Noel Gallagher about the incident and whether or not shoe tossing was a regular occurrence on their travels. (**warning** the language gets a little spicy)

Have fun at the show tonight. Keep your shoes on your feet, and your coins in your pocket.
