Maybe It Was Something I Ate #5: BBQ Pork Bun at New Town Bakery

bbq pork bun

BBQ Pork Bun (Asado Siopao) | New Town Bakery | $1.50

Chinese food and hockey. It’s our family tradition. And it’s always at New Town Bakery in Chinatown.

You will often find an old man sitting at the end of the bakery bar folding the cardboard boxes. The line up at the glass counter will roll over all day long. The buns will come in and out of the back in huge bamboo steamers. It’s a veritable siopao factory, for good reason. New Town Bakery is world famous for their steamed buns, and I will always drop a few coins on the counter after waiting in line for the chewy, doughy, sweet, and savory treat.

Every now and again I get a craving for a siopao in Calgary, but despite working just a few blocks from Chinatown, I have yet to find one as good.

  • Nothing beats New Town Bakery in the Vancouver area either, so finding something comparable in Calgary will be a challenge. I’m partial to the “dai bao” or “big bun” that they have. It has a duck egg, some meat and other goodies inside.
