Daddy Daycare: Riding the Canada Line to YVR Vancouver Airport

20090821 airport - 01

Zacharie is 2. His favourite things in the world are tractors, diggers, trains, planes, trucks and Max and Ruby.

We get enough of the Max and Ruby at home, so for our Daddy Daycare day this week we piled on to the new Canada Line train to head out to the YVR Vancouver Airport and run around. (BTW, have you heard about the motion to change YVR to Terry Fox Airport? It’s worth supporting)

This kind of playdate is about as cheap as you can get. We parked at the King Edward Station lot for free, pumped a few dollars worth of coins into the machine for a day long pass and headed out to the airport. The new Canada Line trains are bright, shiny, and windy. Zacharie loved the wooshing anticipation of the arrival and every second of the ride was oohs and aahhs.

Once at the Airport, Zacharie was on a mission to find his machine. Zacharie’s favourite machine is the luggage cart loader. It’s a simple pushing car that drives around the concourse gathering discarded luggage carts and lining them up outside for new passengers. Zacharie LOVES this. LOVES IT. We followed it for a good 10 minutes and he even got to go for a quick ride with the operator.

He posed for his picture on a podium set up to welcome the world for 2010, we looked at the stuffed belugas at the Vancouver Aquarium shop. We stared at the towering totems and looked at the international departure board wishing we were in line for the next flight to Tokyo.

After that we headed back in to the domestic terminal and their new viewing area on the departures level behind the concessions. It’s a big open area with HUGE windows to watch the planes loading, unloading, taxiing and doing all sorts of plane things. Zacharie could have sat here for hours. We picked at some lunch that I brought, pointed at the planes, looked in the telescope and counted the machines.

After about 2 hours of running around the airport it was time for the Canada Line ride back, this time making sure we loaded in at the front of the train to get the best view.

After we got off at our stop and got loaded in to the car Zacharie was asleep in 10 blocks. What a seriously awesome daddy daycare day.
