Rediscovering Julia Child

Julie and Julia, is much more than the story of two women discovering the beauty of butter. It’s about love, life, deadlines and accomplishments – dipped in butter.

The film about Julia Child and a woman cooking everything from Julia’s cookbook is an absolutely sweet, beautiful (and delicious) movie.

Based on The Julie/Julia Project, a 2002 blog, the film perfectly blends the two stories of women in different eras discovering themselves. Never mind those schlocky romantic comedies that are churned out of copycat machines, this is a chick flick.

It’s already inspired one girl, and her dad, the desire to don some pearls and attempt poached eggs. It’s given me a craving for Boeuf Bouguignon. And I’m sure it’s encouraging hundreds of others to turn to YouTube to relive the friendly magic that Meryl Streep so beautifully recreates on screen.

Julia Child learned to cook when she was 37. Her husband was a diplomat in Paris and she needed something to occupy her time. She tried many things before truly finding her passion. She spent 8 years writing Mastering the Art of French Cooking but it was never work because it was what she loved.

That’s the true gift in life. Finding something you to do that you love. It will never be work, it will always be a joy. That’s why I want to get back behind a microphone. It’s what I love. It’s who I am.

Thanks Julia.

Wow I didn’t know she was 37. I can’t wait to see the movie.

I thought this movie was ok, maybe a little too long. I loved Meryl’s parts, she did an excellent job, but I found Amy Adams to be very bland and showed no diversity in the role. I haven’t read the book yet, but a friend of mine who I watched it with said that the character was much more endearing in the book, whereas in the movie we agreed she was just annoying and whiney.

  • Good point – I did love Julia far more than Julie and that’s where most of my smiles came from during the movie. It easily could have been cut in half and just been 60mins on Julia.

  • My mom always says that she idolizes Julia Child…and I thank her for that because I've always thought that my mother was a great cook.
