Fun Family Friday Night at Hastings Park Racecourse
Want a cheap and fun Friday night out with the family? Whether you have teens, tweens or toddlers, a night at Hastings Park Racecourse has something for everyone. Even if you dont know the difference between a quinella or an exactor, a win vs a show – you can have a fun, cheap night without spending a lot.
First off, if you can pick the right night, there is nothing more spectacular in the whole city than the view of the North Shore Mountains on a summer’s eve from the infield. The sky turns a rich cobalt blue and the mountains glow in the twilight – it’s awesome. So perfect, in fact, it was one of Jennifer and I’s first dates that sealed the deal 3 years ago.
So it’s good for romance, as your heart starts racing with each favourite you toss a toonie on, but there’s also fun for the rest of the family.
Zacharie loved the tractors that cleared the infield. Tweens love the horses. Teens love to “bet” on which one is going to come in. Mom and dad? Well, we get to bet for real.
Parking is $8. Sounds steep, until you see you get a $2 coupon for a free program (which is mandatory) and a $5 food voucher. So make that parking $1 – not bad.
Admission is free and just $2 will get you a bet on the ponies and the odds are easy enough to follow along that you shouldn’t get too deep into the red. Our whole night out cost us $15, only because Daddy chased a long shot when he shouldn’t have.
No matter how old your kids are, a Friday night or a weekend afternoon at Hastings Park Racecourse is a great way to spend some fun family time.

There’s something about a night at the races that makes you feel like you’re on holidays somewhere exotic. It may be the infield flower gardens, the locals with hats and race cards, or the different smells. A great deat. Better than mini-golf – and the same price.
