Run The North Shore: Tender Knee
People in North Vancouver are crazy. They’re a different breed entirely.
There are different types of people all over Metro Vancouver, but the type on the Shore is special. You got your posh people in Shaughnessy, your hipsters in Kits, your granola smokers on Commercial Drive, but in North Vancouver it’s nothing but crazy ass adrenaline junkies.
Never mind two car garages, in North Vancouver it’s all about the double bike racks.
Yesterday I joined the crowd to get an introduction to trail running with the Run The Shore 2009 Trail Series race called The Tender Knee.
Want to know why your knees get tender? Because you have nice little kick UP, and then you spend the rest of the race going DOWN. Over roots and rocks and ravines. DOWN on your knees is HARD.

The Tender Knee was part of 2 races this weekend, the other was the Iron Knee – both not to be confused with the Knee Knacker which is entirely stupid all together.
The race is organized by the gang out of North Shore Athletics, and I first discovered the race last weekend when I was picking up some new shoes for the Easter Island Marathon. I had an 8 mile run on my training calendar this weekend, and decided to check out the Tender Knee as a way to pound up some hills and, hopefully, not blow out any knees or ankles on the way back down – and it was a close call.
Here’ some footage from today’s race:
