Vancouver Bike To Work Week Route Planner
It’s Bike to Work Week in Vancouver, so I thought I’d take part (finally). You see, it takes a little convincing to get me on board with these cycling shenanigans as I live in North Vancouver and work in Richmond, that’s quite a hike up and down many ridges and hills.
Nonetheless, I wanted to try it out and the weather cooperated today for a kick at it. First up I checked out Cycle Vancouver to plan my route. It uses Google Maps to help you cycle from here to there using any number of criteria. You can avoid hills, choose the fastest route, or stick to the cycling routes in Vancouver.
I chose the cycling routes, which in Vancouver are beautiful tree lined streets in quiet neighborhoods. The routes run parallel to the major thoroughfares and are equipped with light changing buttons at cyclist level at intersections.
It was a side of East Vancouver I’d never seen before. Elementary schools with playgrounds, blossoming trees leaning over elegant old houses, and gardens exploding with spring colour.
As you would expect, I fired off random tweets with some photos while I was on my ride, and shot the entire thing on a spanky new Flip Mino HD.
In the end it took my 90 minutes to go the 17 miles from my house to the Virgin Radio Factory. That’s faster than the bus, but still about 3x as long as it takes me by car.
Would I do this every day? No. Once a week or a couple times a month for some cross training? Sure.
Yes, it’s Bike To Work Week, so I tried it out – unfortunately I forgot that once you bike to work, you have to bike home. I’m only halfway done.
