Who Took the Picture of Vancouver in the Fog?

Much discussion happened this week when this photo started appearing in email boxes and blogs across the city.

Vancouver Sunrise in the Fog

Then it appeared in the Vancouver Sun on Thursday attributed to Scott Miller. Yet one of the commenters on my blog, Kat, insisted it belonged to Blair Kent. She gave me Blair’s email, so I sent him a note to explain the story behind the shot.

Here’s what he wrote:

I was up the mountain at 6:45 am last weekend and a couple of guys were beside me. When I got home I emailed the shots to numerous people and never realized how good they were. As it turns out they emailed their friends and so on.

My picture is now circulating around North America. A friend at work got the shot from his brother in Boston as an example.

The shot in the Van Sun is most likely from the Scott Miller.

I am getting tens of lectures from people at work why I never submitted the photo. My originals are 8-9 megs in size and the one you may have has been shrunk by 4x.

I just got the 12 x 18’s from Coscto today and they are amazing.

So there you go, the picture was taken by a number of different people at the same time. The one posted here is by Blair Kent.

Here’s 3 others he’s taken during the 3 weeks of fog in the city. (Here’s Blair Kent’s Flickr stream for more brilliant work)

  • so who had the canon 5d? ;)
  • Sounds like Blair did. And I'm pleased that the best version of this shot is by him!
  • Okay, I know this is obsessive, but I made a video showing that they are two different photos, from two slightly different perspectives:

Derek! That is so cool that you did the comparison. They are different, but it's really only visible in the clouds - thanks for clarifying it...

The shot is awesome no matter what!
  • What a shame that Blair never really got the full credit, at least in the work e-mails that got sent around.

I even got them in my mailbox!

Either way, fantastic photos and how wonderful that photos of our beautiful city got circulated all around the world.
  • These are so amazing
  • During those 2 weeks of fog, there were probably 20 people up at the Cypress first lookout every day... more on top of the mountain. There are likely to be a LOT of photos that look very similar. :)

    Mine are here:

Mother nature sure gave us all a great scene to shoot!
  • It looks like the BCTV News Hour will address the question of who took this photo on their 6 p.m. edition today (Jan 28).
  • BCTV's answer: "Dunno who took the photo, but there were a bunch of people up there who took a whole lot of cool pics." Very helpful. :)
  • And yet here, plain and simple and obvious and discussed on the internets FOR THE PAST WEEK before their story aired, is the answer.

Shame they couldnt highlight Blair's awesome work.
  • Michelle
Who cares!? If you'd been up one of the mountains during the fog, you would know how beautiful it was and how every shot could be a piece of art. Nice picture---> NEXT!
  • Kendall
Can anyone tell me what the mountain in the background is?
  • Right is Orcas Island, left is a mountain near Bellingham.
  • Awesome photos - I blogged them as soon as I received them - without being able to give credit.

Thanks to Kat for clearing up this confusion!
