That’s So Gay, It’s Retarded.

Now that we have an African American in the White House, can we move to the next lines on the ledger of discrimination and hatred?

That’s so gay.

OMG, that’s retarded.

Phrases you hear everyday at the bus stop, in the school hall, at the workplace. The language of youth has accepted these phrases to equal stupid, ugly, dumb or unacceptable.

And that’s just as unacceptable as dropping an n bomb on Mr President.

My best friend is gay. He is not stupid, ugly, dumb or unacceptable.

A dear friend has a child with down’s syndrome. He is not stupid, ugly, dumb or unacceptable.

When you use these phrases you are the one who should be embarassed.

You are the one who is stupid, ugly, dumb, and unacceptable.

Both are pretty huge in Boston, but not a regular part of my friends' vernacular. There are so many other words to use... why people get stuck on something that has nothing to do with what they really want to say, I'll never know.

    Thanks, pop culture.

I completely agree that the use of these words is incredibly inappropriate. The best analogy I ever heard to bring home the impact was to imagine if people started using your name the same way they use the words 'gay' or 'retarded.' Imagine living with those negative connotations being associated with one of the prime labels for your self identity.
  • you know it Buzz. Growing up, my Mom was a special needs working in public schools. I could say Fuck, no worries, I say 'retarded' and Mom would take me aside and say, "disappointed."

still hard to stop using these words sometimes... listen to American radio and the rock jocks drop them on air!
