Kingyo Izakaya Review

Kingyo

Kingyo Izakaya
871 Denman Street, Vancouver

Jen and I had a birthday date night last night. I couldnt tell you really what we ate.

There was some Kobe beef, a pork rice dish in a hot rock, some sashimi, some negitori sushi, a teriyaki chicken salad and other tiny plates.

I love Japanese food, but I don’t really know how to order it. I just kinda scan the menu and point and pick that way. Jen is allergic to shellfish and doesn’t like seafood, so doing Japanese doesnt happen very often.

The menu was scattered with enough meat and veg to pick for both of us. The food was good, it was excellent, but that’s not what sold me on Kingyo Izakaya.

It was the people.

Big smiling faces, tiny buzzing waiters screaming in Japanese when new guests came in or fresh orders were placed. There was probably 5 people working the floor and I think we saw each and every one of them visit our table. Each friendly, helpful, courteous, quick and enthusiastic.

The food was good, yes, but it was the service and ambiance of Kingyo that would have me recommending it again and again and again. (Especially if you can go with someone who knows and loves Japanese food to discover the nuggets in the deep, rich menu).

  • Kingyo's been around for over a year. If there was a problem it would have been addressed by now.

The layouts are similar, but it's a coaster - not their logo.

$5 says in a week they'll have lawyers from that certain coffee chain crawling through the mail slot with cease and desist paperwork.
  • The logo looks eerily similar to that of a certain coffee chain from Seattle, WA, no?

    I'm just sayin'...
