I’m Not Going to DisneyWorld!
When quarterbacks throw the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl or when goalies shut out their opponents in the Stanley Cup, the first thing they declare is a vacation to a Disney theme park.
I thought I was going to join the parade running a half marathon down Main St next weekend in Orlando as leader for Team Diabetes Disney World, but that’s been put on hold.
We launch Virgin Radio Vancouver on Thursday, my original travel day. So that would mean pushing my travel to Friday. The flight from Vancouver – Orlando via Chicago would have me arriving at 10p local time (provided everything was on time). I would then be woken at 330a local time for a bus to the start line of the race.
From landing to bus pick up, I would have 5 hours. Factor in wake up and travel time and you’re looking at 3ish hours of sleep before a half marathon – not good.
I was game to try it, but thankfully management at Virgin and organizers with Team Diabetes talked me out of it.
The 330 wake up call is what really chaffes me. The Team Diabetes accomodations are less than 2km from the start line, yet Disney needs to have everything so controlled, they mandate a bus pickup for runners that will have you coralled in the pre-dawn darkness for nearly 2 hours before your 6am start time. I could have woken up at 5a, had a 2km warm up walk to the start line and still had 30+ minutes to spare before the start.
Regardless, I will not be leading the Team Diabetes Disney World team this weekend and I’m a little pissed about it (but thankful at the same time).
The weather has thrown a SERIOUS wrench into any sort of running. The lack of plowing of sidewalks has made running outdoors absolutely impossible and I just can’t get more than 40 minutes out of a treadmill.
Originally I had planned to run in spirit with the team this weekend by doing a solo half marathon of a couple laps around Stanley Park – I don’t know if that can happen, I don’t have the fitness and the roads are hardly safe.
So the first major run of the year is a wash, but the other big one on my calendar will NOT be. I am fully funded for Team Diabetes Easter Island. Jennifer is going to join me on the trip and we are making it our honeymoon before the July wedding.
Best of luck to Tanya Davis, who I wrangled into running this weekend, I know she will wave the local blogstar flag high this weekend – wish I was there.
The Blog According to Buzz. Spread the word, ya heard?

Saying the weather has screwed with training is an understatment. I haven’t done a long run in weeks! Lots of shorts ones though. I must say though that the thought of Disney is what has gotten me through this weather craziness here in vancouver.
Keep up the running! Best of Luck with Virgin.
Bummer dude. At least you can still live vicariously through me when I go for glory at the Tiger Direct Charity PC Race this Thursday in Vegas. Speaking of which, I better start training by tearing apart my computers and putting them back together again. Worse comes to worse, I’ll bring a screwdriver and start taking apart things in my hotel room.
I know that Team Diabetes means a lot to you so hopefully I’ll be able to bring home the grand prize and throw some into your fundraising pot.
Hey Buzz… Darn you
You’ll be missed, but I totally understand why the circumstances had you change your plans. I’ll be thinking of you as I drag myself over the finish line next weekend! Thanks for inspiring me to be a part of this!
Christine and I, and the rest of the Team will have a blast while we’re down there… And, I hope you have an amazing launch for Virgin!!
Oh Buzz and I was visualizing you carrying me across the finish line …will have to count on all the other male runners..maybe John , our on-site trainer ?
Serious question and I look forward to your response : Could it be arranged for someone (when us half marathoners have crossed the finish line ) to call the Virgin Radio Station at about 6.30 am Vancouver time on Sat. Jan 10 for an interview with you ????
Training in Salmon Arm a challenge too as in all the other winters , however I discovered a hockey rink, Sunwave Center ..actuallly much better training for me than last time for Disney World at a gym on a treadmill .
All my love , Nel P , 7 time Team Diabetes Alumna
