A Day Without Internet

internet was closed - buzzbishop.com

After reading Michael Kwan’s post about his possible internet addiction, I had to admit something to myself: I have the same problem.

I get up and check my email, scan my feeds. In between showering and getting dressed, I check email and scan feeds. At red lights, I check email and scan feeds.

I am constantly twittering, and consuming media. I am plugged in to the matrix, hardwired to the borg, and I can’t let go.

So I decided to try. For 24 hours I would go without web. I turned off my computer on Monday night (something I almost never do because it takes forever to reboot). I turned off my iPhone.

Tuesday I spent the day doing groceries, playing with Z, having lunch with Jen, taking down the Christmas decorations, re-arranging our crawl space and cleaning out my office.

I actually accomplished things. I didnt tweet any of them. I didnt take “a quick break” in between tasks to read the latest news about nothing. I just had a day without web.

fleury brut rose - martini boysWell, sort of .. I did have 2 little breaks. One where I helped Jen on her computer try to find a champagne for tonight (strawberry pink Fleury – it’s $84 at Liberty Wine Merchants – we took a pass) and when we were at Old Navy, I flipped on my iPhone and sorted some spam (I didnt read any email)

Could this be a trend or resolution for 2009? I don’t know.. there was still much downtime where I could have plugged in for a few seconds to fill in the gaps, but I’m sure Jen appreciated me not tweeting during lunch or running off to check email in between shower and breakfast.

Here’s the best part, as we sat down to watch the news at dinner I actually knew the details of the stories they were talking about before they announced them. Despite being unplugged for the better part of a day, I was still ahead of the curve.

  • I am online for 12 hours or more a day. I can't unplug.

I dream of a holiday void of all electronics on a deserted sandy beach.
  • I'm glad my post inspired you to try unplugging too. I managed to make it about 36 hours before caving. Someone left a comment on my blog, challenging me to unplug for a week. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do it. A weekend was hard enough.
  • So, that's where you were!!! Good on ya!! I couldn't do it. I admit, I'm addicted.
