Almost 400 Cover Versions of Wham’s Last Christmas

george michaelThe whole reason Hugh Grant’s character is independently wealthy in About a Boy is because his father wrote a Christmas song.

Hugh’s character lives off the royalties from his dad’s one hit.

So imagine how much the family of Bobby Boris Pickett must make off Monster Mash every year.

Then think about how much money George Michael must make off Last Christmas. There is only one version of Monster Mash, there are nearly 400 covers of Last Christmas – each time any of them gets played on radio anywhere in the world, George gets paid.

He makes enough every Christmas to spend the next 364 days visiting assorted bathrooms, rummaging through bushes and passing out in parked cars. It doesn’t matter how he misbehaves, the money will ALWAYS come in because of this.one.song.

The track is so popular, it has it’s own website Last-Christmas.com. There you can find more info on the nearly 400 versions of the song and download HUGE zip files containing most of them.

Stars off the top of my head to do covers include Taylor Swift, Hilary Duff, Jimmy Eat World, Kimberly Locke, Zamfir, Nelly Furtado, Darren Hayes, Whigfield and on and on and on.

And that’s just the North American stars – check out the thick accents working through the chorus and verse in this megamix I edited together.

Is this the greatest Christmas song of all time? Maybe, maybe not. However it does all boil down to a lot of money for Mr Michael to spend time blowing who and what wherever he wants.
