After taking contest entries from fans across the city, Vancouver Aquarium members voted on the short list and the name Tiqa was chosen.

“It was a runaway winner. It was clearly in the lead from the start,” said Vancouver Aquarium spokesman Kent Hurl. With 46% of the vote, Tiqa beat out — in order — Mira, Kuvia, Shiya and Sura.

Christine McDonald of West Vancouver submitted the winning entry which is a made up name using the first letter of Tuesday, the day she was born, plus the first letter from each of the other belugas in her family – Imaq, Qila and Aurora.
