Today is the 9th anniversary of the death of race car driver, Greg Moore.
On October 31, 1999, I was sitting in my townhouse in Richmond, getting ready to head out for a radio station Halloween party when I saw this:
Following an early race restart, on lap nine of the race Moore apparently lost control of his car in the exit of turn 2 and spun into the infield grass at more than 200 mph. His car hit an access road and was ‘tripped’ over to strike the infield concrete wall upside-down at unabated speed. Upon impact he suffered massive head, brain, neck, and other internal injuries. Just a few months earlier, he came by the Z95.3 studios and was hanging out playing Star Wars Pod Racer in our lunchroom. He even let us win.

The biggest push for World Diabetes Day is raising awareness about people living with Diabetes and how we can live a healthier life to avoid Diabetes.
In 2007 and 2008, the theme of World Diabetes Day is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Type 1 diabetes is growing by 3% per year in children and adolescents, and at an alarming 5% per year among pre-school children. It is estimated that 70,000 children under 15 develop type 1 diabetes each year (almost 200 children a day). Currently, an estimated 440,000 children live with type 1 diabetes globally. Type 2 diabetes was once seen as a disease of adults but today, it is growing at alarming rates in children and adolescents.
The International Diabetes Federation’s two year focus on children through the World Diabetes Day campaign, aims to increase awareness among parents and caregivers, teachers, healthcare professionals, politicians and the public. [WorldDiabetesDay.org]
In Vancouver, the sails of Canada Place will be bathed in blue on November 14 and you’re being invited to join in the Hoopla on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery. (The logo is a blue hoop - hoola hoop…)
As the countdown continues for World Diabetes Day, here are some ways you can pitch in:
Ask Google for a Doodle. Google does special designs for special days, the O’s in the Google logo would look great as blue circles.
It’s time for the first of many Vancouver Canuck hockey ticket auctions to benefit Team Diabetes Easter Island. This is for November 4 for the Vancouver Canucks v Nashville Predators.
The seats 5-6 in section 302 row 11. Here’s a video of the view:
You’re behind Roberto Luongo in the first and third periods and have a great angle to watch all the action develop and head down the ice in both directions.
Single game value for the tickets is $100 for the pair, and that’s where the bidding starts. Anything above that becomes a donation to Team Diabetes and tax receiptable.
In other words, whoever makes the largest donation to Team Diabetes wins the right to buy the tickets at $100.
The starting bid is $100. Please break your bid down in the comments section below.
(For example $100 + $25 = $100 for tickets, $25 for Team Diabetes etc)
The auction will close at 7p on Friday, October 31.
BTW, Leafs fans, be listening to 95 Crave on World Diabetes Day, November 14, for your chance to bid on tickets for The Vancouver Canucks v Toronto Maple Leafs on November 15.

I fear this could be one of those secrets that I share and no longer becomes useful. Like going through the Duty Free store at the border. It used to turn a 2hr wait into 20 minutes, now everyone pops in to pick up lemon drops and the wait is just the same.
Nonetheless, here’s how you can save $25 on parking when going to events at GM Place. Yes, I said SAVE $25 on parking, because on Saturday night when both the Lions and Canucks were playing, parking in and around the stadiums was $30.
But if you walk a couple blocks towards Chinatown, you can nab a spot for $5. Walk another block and you can grab a HUGE Chinese dinner for 2 for $20 and look what you just did - dinner AND parking with $5 left over for 50-50 tickets at the game.

The lot is at the corner of Keefer and Columbia/Quebec, it has large orange P signs on the side. Pull in, pay your $5 in advance and pick a spot.
Just a block and a half away from the lot is New Town Bakery [158 E Pender]. The siopaos here are legendary and only $1.30. You can also select a 3 item meal and bowl of Won Ton soup for just $11, or scan the value menu for bowls of ramen soup for just $6.50. My grandfather and I had a fully filling meal for just $17 between us.
The only drawback to this parking spot is the area. But, if you’re going on a busy game night, or concert event, there should be enough traffic going to and from the venue at the same time as you to make you feel a little safe.
If it’s too dodgy for you, pony up the extra bucks and park downtown or near the rink.
I should add one other place to pick up a great parking deal for events at GM Place would be the Edgewater Casino. There, you can park for free - sorta. The up front fee is $40, but the sign says it’s refundable. That means you have to pay up front, but if you step inside the casino you can get your money back… provided you don’t dump it at the tables.
This lot is a bit of a nightmare getting in and out of. It’s tight, underground and there’s only one way in, and one way out. That means it gets VERY busy after a game when everyone is trying to leave at the same time.
I had my key in the ignition at Keefer and Columbia/Quebec at 9:54. I was home in North Vancouver by 10:11. I’m guessing the guys under the Edgewater were still waiting to get out.
For the next 18 months, the World Cup circuits for Winter Olympic sports will be making their way through Vancouver and Whistler testing out the 2010 Olympic facilities and acting as dress rehearsals for the games.
This weekend it was the World Cup Short Track Speed Skating tour taking a swing around the Pacific Coliseum’s ice as a pre-cursor to the games. There are many great things about these pre-Olympic trial runs. They’re bona fide World Cup events, so Olympic calibre athletes are competing, and tickets are easy to grab.
We were sitting just right of centre ice, 10 rows up for Sunday’s round of finals and the tickets were just $15 each, no waiting list required.
We saw about a dozen races, watched Canada pick up a half dozen medals, and caught Apollo Anton Ohno showing off his stuff in a thrilling final relay that saw the US barely edge out Canada.
Excited about 2010 now? The energy of a half filled Coliseum was enough to convince me this weekend to get my name down for short track tickets.

Mimi and her sisters LOVE to carve pumpkins. Over the past few years, they’ve become sort of expert carvers. Mimi heard me talking about the Barack-o-Latern template that’s online, and sent me an email saying she could do much better.
She offered to do one for our office with the 95Crave logo in it and offered up these tips to have a perfect pumpkin for Halloween.
Pumpkins kept indoors don’t last very long, and molds easily. So if you get one this weekend, don’t leave it inside. Keep it in the garage or basement.
A carved pumpkin only lasts 3 days, so wait until at least Tuesday before you do your carving.
To get a cool template, you can look online for stencils, or use pages from kid’s colouring books.
Mimi doesn’t have fancy tools, just a dollar store chisel and curved blade.
Once you have it carved, keep the lid of the pumpkin on a tilt, to allow it to breathe.
Instead of tea candles, my sisters and I use light bulbs. Just pop in a small light bulb, like Christmas lights, from a hole in the backside of the pumpkin. It’s safe, looks amazing in the dark, and won’t scorch the inside of the pumpkin.
BTW, if you’re looking for a pumpkin this weekend, the best pumpkin patch is Country Farms in Richmond. It’s ABSOLUTELY HUGE and it’s where we’re taking Z this weekend.

Yesterday was huge. 95Crave had 25 Madonnabe’s in a 12 hour dance-a-thon at Coquitlam Centre to win tickets to Madonna’s first ever Vancouver concert and $10 000 cash.
Everyone was geting down to the tunes that were cranked to 11 in the mall atrium. Even Z.
Z had a great afternoon, he even tried to take the mic from me.

After taking contest entries from fans across the city, Vancouver Aquarium members voted on the short list and the name Tiqa was chosen.
“It was a runaway winner. It was clearly in the lead from the start,” said Vancouver Aquarium spokesman Kent Hurl. With 46% of the vote, Tiqa beat out — in order — Mira, Kuvia, Shiya and Sura.
Christine McDonald of West Vancouver submitted the winning entry which is a made up name using the first letter of Tuesday, the day she was born, plus the first letter from each of the other belugas in her family - Imaq, Qila and Aurora.
