He's no dumb-dumb and he knew the songs he chose last night weren't going to get anybody excited enough to vote for him. He'll be more successful in his career if he's not saddled with the American Idol title and all the restrictions and limitations that it brings (think Daughtry who I also believe threw the competition on purpose). Archuleta on the other hand, would have (as you said) no place to go but Broadway without the American Idol title. Even with it he's probably headed straight to Broadway... although he did sing his face off last night. I've got to hand it to him. The kid did well.
