Wow. Talk about good will.

London Drugs is taking back ALL bottles made with BPA. No.questions.asked. You get a gift card in amount of the FULL retail price.

A pal of mine told me about the program and Jen had heard about it too. She took ALL of our Avent bottles back, the nipples, the soothers, the microwave sterilizer. ALL OF IT. In the end, Jen walked out with a $200 store credit.

The guy at the Customer Service counter was apologizing to Jen for them having sold the stuff in the first place.

“London Drugs has been educating customers about the dangers of BPA since
January,” said Wynne Powell, president of London Drugs. “When we learned of
the possible risks from BPA, we immediately started purchasing BPA-free
products and providing customers with information to help them make an
informed choice when purchasing products like plastic baby bottles and sippy
cups. As concern continued to mount around BPA earlier this week, we
immediately removed all baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, and select food
containers and water bottles containing BPA from our store shelves. Our
customer service specialists in our stores and at our head office in Richmond
are available to answer our customers’ questions and provide information on
these BPA alternatives.” [source]

We didnt buy our bottles from London Drugs, they were given as gifts at showers etc, but LD took them back.

They’ll also take back your stanky Nalgene bottles too.

Amazing. Congratulations. Way to go.

BTW, London Drugs sells BornFree, a brand of plastic bottles made WITHOUT BPA. We switched Z over to them this week and he has had no issues with the new nipples etc. Guess what we’re getting with our $200 gift card from London Drugs??

Thank you London Drugs. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Are you serious??? Way to go London Drugs!! I might have to take some stuff in there too…

Serious. I hear Zellers is doing the same.

    Hey,
So I’ve been reading all this on your blog all week and I gotta be honest, at first I thought it really didn’t matter to me since I don’t have kids and when I do actually have them, hopefully this will all be sorted out and somehow it will be common knowledge (ok, I know how that sounds, but I couldn’t be bothered and was hoping by the time I plan on having kids, hopefully at least 5 years from now, it would be a cautionary chapter in one of those “what to expect” books or something, lol). But then as I sat at the library today trying to force my brain to learn info for my final exams this week I took a look at my Nalgene bottle and the bottom had the recycle 7 symbol, suddenly everything you have been blogging about made sense and I realize maybe this does mean something to me…. so I have to say thanks to you. Also… you’re saying I can take my Nalgene bottles back to London Drugs, even though they’re used and bought at Sport Check? They’ll give me store credit? If so, that’s awesome…. do you know of any other sports bottles without BPA that I might be able to buy (maybe at L.D.)

I should note the federal government’s comments come in relation to baby bottles. Trace amounts of bpa leach, but because it’s a 10 pound baby vs a 150 pound adult, you can see how a trace would affect each differently.

So the gov is mostly concerned about the kids.. but .. if it’s bad for kids, it can’t be good totally for us.

MEC and Lulu pulled BPA bottles last year, if you really want plastic, talk to them about an alternative.

The other trend seems to be just tossing plastic altogether and going for stainless steel.

This is GREAT news! I finally had time to go and do a post about this (and other environmental stuff). Hooray for London Drugs! We have one here, so I am going to talk to them.

    You are inspiring, Buzz.

I wrote a blog post about this also. Scary stuff! Makes mw want to get rid of all of our plastics, but wont happen. We have sports drink bottles that have really hard colored blue plstic and am getting rid of them also.

THANKS for the great tip Buzz, WTG London Drugs

  9. Lynn says:

That’s great of LD to that. But I went there (the North Van one on Lonsdale)on Friday and they were still selling Dasani water that had a 7 on the bottom of the bottle. Weren’t they saying they would stop carrying ANY products that had this # on their bottle?? I’m so confused . . ..

  10. Jim T says:

Lynn, the 7 on the bottom of the bottle doesn’t mean it was manufactured using BPa. The 7 means the plastic has a classification of ‘other’. This happens to be the same classification as most plastics that are manufactured using BPa. The plastics you need to watch for are the hard plastic containers. The Dasani water containers you are referring to are soft plastic.

  13. LD requires receipts after May 5, 2008 for BPA bottle returns - PG says:

Buzz, thanks for the info in your blog and the sources such as Z rec!

FYI, London Drugs will be requiring a receipt after May 5, 2008 for any BPA infant bottle returns so get them in before then. I just saw a sign in their store today and confirmed that with their customer service line 1-888-991-2299.

LD has a max return limit of 6 Avent bottles at a time but not every clerk seems to enforce that. From speaking with a clerk, eventually Avent will will not be accepting any more bottles back so this program will be phased out. But LD should give some notice 1-2 weeks before that happens. Keep up the good work!

  14. Anna says:

Do you know of any places in us that would take the AVENT baby bottles, pumps, sippy cups back?

  15. buzz says:

See the update posted on May 4, Anna.. there’s a 1800 # for you to call and ream out Avent.

  16. Andrea says:

London Drugs is no longer taking back Avent bottles without a receipt as of May 5th. I am really angry about this as I have been to the store about 4 times to buy the Born free bottles and they were out of stock every time. My baby needed something to drink from until I could replace the Avent. Today, May 6th - they have stock and guess what; they won’t take my bottles.

  17. buzz says:

Andrea .. apparently Superstore is still doign refunds.

  18. toni says:

Any advice for uk residents. The first time i heard of BPA was yesterday 6th May!
I used avent products for all my babies (3) currently using tommee tippee bottles and microwave steamer with my 6 week old, so you can imagine my alarm. Im trying not to panic. NCT where on tv yesterday talking about this, ask viewers to ring if concerned, when I rang, the adviser said she didnt have a clue what I was talking about. I dont want to panic, but will see doctor and health visitors for advice and get kids checked. I feel such a bad mother as ive been surrounded by mums who solely breastfed their babies, I did both as my babies didnt get enough straight from the breast.

  19. toni says:

what i didnt say was stores here in UK were selling microwaveable sterilizers at a discount, supposedly on offer now I know different, they were getting rid of them prior to the release of the recent report in uk this week.
