Archive for January, 2008

Happy Birthday to me, here's what's on the radio for you:

    - Yup.  January 28, birthday for me and Sarah McLachlan, Stan Smyl and Nick Carter.

    - Kuljeet brought in cupcakes for our little studio party today, I think they're just an excuse to eat icing without looking like a piggy pig pig.

    - More snow is coming in tonight. The family took time yesterday to be a tourist in our own town, the new term is "take a photowalk."

    - The SuperBowl is this weekend. Why won't you see the good ads? Tod explains.

    - The New Kids on the Block reunion has been put on hold.

    - A private company wants to build a 16 mile tunnel off Long Island, maybe we can get them to hook us up with Vancouver Island?

    - Single?  You're no longer trendy.  Having a ball and chain is the new black.  Thankfully we're here to hook you up at  Cravin Misbehavin.

    - These aren't mom jeans, they're jeans that Farrah Fawcett endorsed back in the 70s, they just look like mom jeans.

    - Ils parlent francais.  French lessons just jumped the shark, KFed has Britney's kids learning the language of love.

voting boothHave you ever really thought about how and why you vote the way you do?

Are you Liberal, Republican, New Democrat, Independent, etc because your parents were? Is there one burning issue that supercedes all others that causes you to lean one way, irregardless of the others?

I always thought it was weird that the unions were heavy NDP supporters. The NDP are clear backers of gay rights and marriage, and in the same breath the blue collar boys are rallying around them as “the union friendly party.” Something tells me the union issue superceded the gay issue, when it came to their voting.

The U-S is going through a tumultuous election campaign that started about a war, became about an economy and is slowing degrading into a debate about race and gender. The war and the economy were legitimate “issues,” but in the end, the biggest “issue” facing anyone about to enter a voting booth becomes the most important - charisma.

I’m not eligible to vote in the US election, but like any political junkie I’m standing on the sidelines cheering on my favourite horse. I “thought” it was Hillary Clinton. I don’t know why, I just “liked her best.” I grew up in a Liberal household at the peak of Trudeaumania, so I’ve always sided with the Dems, but honestly my cheering for Hillary had as much thought as to who I will cheer for in the World Series. I didnt analyze anything, I just went with my heart.

Darren Barefoot waded into the issue today, throwing his support behind Barack Obama.

I’m rooting for Obama because he seems like more of a visionary and an agent of change. He’s also the superior orator. That may not make him a better president, but I might have to listen to one of them for the next four or eight years, so I’m going with the better public speaker.[source]

I’m guessing Darren’s always had a liberal attitude, but when it came to deciding who to cheer for, it was charisma that became the big election issue, not the actual issues.

The website GlassBooth.org lets you rate the issues facing the current candidates on level of importance to you. Then it asks you 20 questions based on those issues. It then matches your personal and moral values with the values expressed by the candidates so far in the campaign.

I took a similar poll in the last Canadian election, I should have voted for the Bloc Quebecois. For a vehement nationalist like myself, this was a bitter pill - but I’m guessing my unique combination of liberal and conservative attitudes is reflected by Gilles Duceppe, notwithstanding clause be damned.

mike gravel is my homeboyIn the American example, I’m scheduled to throw my support behind Mike Gravel. I have no idea who he is. I don’t know what he looks like. I have never seen him speak. But according to the survey at GlassBooth.org, he’s the candidate whose values best match mine, at 83%. John Edwards is a 74% match, Hillary is a 73% match.

Mike Gravel isn’t grabbing any newstalk air time. He’s not being featured on Oprah. He may not be the most charismatic candidate in the campaign, but he’s the one that matches my issues the best.

I think all voters should be asked to take a test like GlassBooth.org, instead of voting. You are asked what you believe in, which issues are important and your personal values are then matched with the candidate best reflecting your belief system. Think of it as Lavalife for the Voting Booth.

Something tells me that if we elected officials based on the issue of issues, instead of the issue of charisma, we’d bitch a lot less and have a more effective government.

That said, it will be a cold day in hell before I put an ‘X’ next to a candidate from the BQ.

It’s my birthday too!

How old am I? Well, as The Tragically Hip sing it, I’m 38 Years Old.

Here are some pics from the winter of 1970, when my parents, Sandra and Georges, brought me home from the hospital in Cornwall, Ontario.

mom and buzz dad and buzz

I quickly learned my favourite sparring partner would be my grandfather. Here, on my first birthday, Grumps and I get into it. While my mom and Nan and I beam.

My grandmother is, quite simply, my favourite person in the history of the world.

Now that I have my own little Zacharie, I realize the love, support and unconditional love poured out by my parents and grandparents.

To say to those four people, “I wouldnt be here without you,” is an understatement, but it sums it all up.

… cause, y’know, all the cool kids do it.

snow at home - buzzbishop.comJen and Zacharie
and I woke up to a blizzard in our little corner of North Van this morning. We thought all the action we were going to see was a 2 block hike to Canadian Tire to get some salt for the driveway.

Then I read Miss 604’s post. Sure, it was blizzarding across the north and east of Metro Vancouver, but lookie at the KatKam from downtown!

kat kam

The KatKam has been around forever, it’s pointed at the Burrard Bridge and is a lifesaver for those around the world who miss the Vancouver view (and those of us who live on the North Shore up against the mountains). While we were getting snowed in, downtown was in the sunshine!

We packed up the sled dogs, made it up and over the 2nd Narrows and wouldnt you know it… 5 kilometres from the 4 cm of snow our house was getting, it was a beautiful glorious Sunday.

We took a photowalk from Kits beach, around Vanier Park and over to Go Fish! at the wharves near Granville Island before taking the shortcut home. A 2hr stroll topped off with fish and chips, beats the heck out of sitting at home snowed in!

It was AWESOME to be a tourist in my own town today. Snapping pictures of things that I had never seen before, like the eagle at Vanier Park, or just didn’t pay attention to, like the the big Totem Pole under the Burrard Bridge.

I even got to be like John Chow, taking a picture of my food. Lol.

Clicking on an image will take you to the enlarged Flickr photo, where I have a set with these shots from our walk.

It’s the All Star Break in the NHL, no games tonight.

But, in the dreams of one little boy, wearing a hockey team’s pj’s to bed for the first time, the Canucks are playing for the Cup.

Here's what I mentioned on air today:

    - Angelina Jolie is pregnant. With twins! So says X17. So is Tori Spelling. Her announcement is a little more official.

    - "I'll take Bad Parents for $300 please, Alex."

    - "I'll take Bad Parents for $400 please, Alex."

    - Today is "The day the blogging died." For John Mayer, at least.

    - David Beckham's hotness might have to do with his obese contribution to global warming.

Sex and the City was an organic hit. It launched and gradually grew in viewership and pop culture influence.

With the writers and creators of that tv series split between two network versions this year (Lipstick Jungle and Cashmere Mafia), they’re trying to recapture the magic to fill the void left by SATC.

But that’s the problem, they’re trying.

The original was big because it was was it was. We fell in love with it gradually, it wasn’t jammed down our throats. These new shows are like a new girlfriend finding out you still long for your ex, so she tries to be exactly like her.

No, it’s over, that ship has sailed. We’ve moved on. We want something new.

Still, Lucy Liu is trying her damndest to be Carrie Bradshaw.

Lucy, I knew Carrie Bradshaw, you are no Carrie Bradshaw, stop trying so hard. You’re going to hurt yourself.

It's halftime!  Here's what's up for Wednesday:

    - It's Weedless Wednesday.  A part of National Non Smoking Week.  Already BC has the lowest smoking rate in the country.  If you still smoke, I'd like to ask you "Why?"  Seriously, why would you do something like that to yourself.  Pretend this is a debate, convince me that smoking is fine and dandy.  You can't do it.  Quit already.

    - Check out what London Drugs can do to help you quit. If you're a teen and willing to pledge to stay smoke free, you could score $5000.

    - Another perfect Vancouver day.  The Best Place on Earth.

    - Janet Jackson's doing the Grammys.  So is Beyonce (with Tina Turner). Britney has been told to stay the hell away.

    - A lot of sensational stories have been written about Heath Ledger. This one isn't like that. Here's a sweet quote from Michelle Williams' father.

    - Mrs Brady wants to be on Dancing with the Stars.

    - Congratulations Coquitlam! You're the Cultural Capital of Canada for 2009.

    - "Um, like, Mom? I'm busy being, like, Zoey 101. Can you, like, look after my baby?"

No, this man did not want the back of his head to look like a baseball. He was attacked by machete weilding savages in Kenya.

zacharia kamau

His name is Zacharia Kamau, he’s a victim of the post election violence that has been ravaging his country for the past few weeks.

I saw Shake Hands with the Devil on the way back from Toronto this weekend. It’s the story of Romeo Dallaire’s time in Rwanda. It tells a similar story to Hotel Rwanda.

Basically the nation was tossed aside by the rest of the world as it was ripped apart by genocide and violence. Is the same happening to Kenyans today?

When the municipal elections roll around in November, will you be “too busy” to vote? Will you be largely uniformed and apathetic?

Think of Zacharia and the price he has paid to fight for the right to choose.
