How secure are you in your career?

Are you a humble servant punching a clock, constantly looking for something better? Are you self employed, always looking for the next opportunity to grow your business?

Maybe you’re totally happy with the job you have right now, you bust your butt doing more than asked and just want the status quo to keep on keeping on.

Maybe you have a job for life with a strong union protecting you even if you show up for work drunk or stoned.

I’ve been on the radio at 95.3 in Vancouver for almost 15 years. That’s a long time. I’ve been in radio for 17, that’s a good kick too.

Last week our ratings came in, and they were less than expected. Now I know my stuff, I work hard, I communicate well and I do a good job. My boss tells me that, my listeners tell me that, I know that.

Last month our company was sold. Our General Manager retired this week. National officers are in town for meetings today.

A colleague just sent me an email. “Are you safe?”, he asked.

I wrote back, “Gretzky was traded. Nobody is safe.”

Now that’s not to say I want a change, or expect a change or need a change. Good Lord, I LOVE my job. I am eager to put the dozens of ideas I have to make things better in motion. My comment is just to say, if you don’t have a little bit of fear in you, you’re working for a union that will grieve your dismissal even if you show up for work drunk and stoned and I don’t work in a union.
