I went to the Grand Opening of the new Starlight Casino in New Westminster last night. Don’t let the location scare you - it’s not really in New West, it’s actually just west of the new Queensborough Landing mall.
I’d say it’s more East Richmond than New West, but I’m sure the city of NW is getting the tax benefits and wants to pump up their hamlet as something other than the home for Honduran drug dealers before they hop the SkyTrain and head downtown.
Back to my point .. the new Starlight Casino is GORGEOUS. Very Vegas. The design is cool and modern and sexy. I could see myself sitting in their Red Bar sipping drinks in a slinky suit with friends before wandering off to have another tug on a one-armed bandit. Very nice room.
(BTW, this positive review has nothing to do with the fact I won the first ever poker tournament played their last night. Nahhh.. So let me balance it by saying I will probably never play poker there again since the Gateway Casino Company (they own Starlight) dont allow players to wear headphones. I’m a music guy, need the music, so I’ll stay at the River Rock.)
Last night at the opening, they had assorted body painted models working the room. 6 nice young ladies who had no problem stripping down to 8 square inches of fabric covering their bottoms and spray paint all over their torsos.
Of the 6, 4 were born with it, 2 were bought and paid for. While I felt awkward having topless models wandering a room of mixed company, I did steal a few stares. Real is better. Definitely better. Pert teardrops of beauty as opposed to rigid cones of stone.
Apparently the same goes for Christmas trees. Who knew?
The David Suzuki Foundation is out with a report saying the real trees produce oxygen, are grown locally and are easily recyclable making them a better choice of the Chinese fakes.
I grew up in a real tree household. But just as I have fallen victim to other modern conveniences, I too got frustrated with the dropping needles, the leaning and the mess. I have gone fake and I love it. We snagged the last Chalet Chic tree by Alfred Sung from Zellers back in November and it’s absolutely perfect.
C’mon, it’s just a tree. I’m just glad my Jenner is all real.

Real. Real. Real. Real. Never anything but real when it comes to bodies. Things might not be perfect, but as with everything but diamonds and Soderbergh films, the imperfections are what make them special.
