Day 1 of Nat and Drew’s Foodbank FillUp is on and here’s what’s going on the radio today:

- All week we are at different Safeway locations across Metro Vancouver.  Today, I’m in Richmond at 2 and Blundell until 7p.  You can donate live and in person, or you can donate directly to the Richmond Food Bank online.

- And you know when I’m on the air, the Crave Cam can’t be far behind… we’re streaming live from the Safeway this afternoon!  Pop in, have a peek and chat.

- I started a new personal blog today.  For those who used to follow my MySpace page, its sort of like that and its on my personal site at BuzzBishop.com

- The Hills wrapped up last night.  I dont watch, I get my fill of drunk, skany, stupid rich people on Entertainment Tonight.  Anyhoo, if you’re a fan check out Perez today, he’s dishing on all the fake drama for next season.

- You think the proposed ban on plastic bags is a little crazy? Wait until you read about the proposal to ban Drive Thrus.

- Real is better than fake.  Works for boobs, AND Christmas Trees.

- Its an iTunes Tuesday!  All the new tracks are released, but if you’re still playing catchup, have a look at the biggest sellers for the year

- Need a holiday pickme up? Cuban Egg Nog Cocktail.

I wasnt really paying attention to The View this morning, (I was making Zacharie’s weekly meals of turnip, prunes and broccoli) but it was in the background and I caught bits and pieces.

Basically the gang got into a discussion about minority and religious candidates and whether or not they can speak for more than just their segment of the population.  (ie, can a black President speak for hispanics? can a woman speak for men? can a Mormon speak for Jews?)

I would think to Canadians this would seem like a ridiculous concept.  Although the Conservatives would like you to think a Quebecer (Dion) can’t speak for Canada.

The Americans spend so much time pigeon holing each other into demographic groups that they lose sight of the big picture.  They run around labelling each tree forgetting there is a beautiful and varied forest sitting right in front of their face.

Barbara got out of the discussion this morning by saying “look how far we’ve come, we have a woman and an African American running for President.”

Whoop de frickin do, Babs.

Women and blacks have been running countries around the world for centuries, glad you guys could get over your “issues” and join the party.

Anyhow, to my point.

While Barbara was beaming about “how far we’ve come.” I’d like to show you just how far they’ve slipped back.  Jessica Simpson wants to be taken seriously as an actress. Her last few flicks have bombed or gone straight to DVD.  So how is she going to make it in H’wood?

By taking off her top.

She’s getting lots of offers to get naked and that’s pretty much the only way she’ll ever be a box office draw.

Look how far we’ve come, right Barbara?

Last week I was broadcasting from a mall on 95Crave. I cracked open my MacBook, hijacked a wifi connection and I had a streaming video signal online for all to see.

Today we are doing Nat and Drew’s Foodbank FillUp from Safeway locations across the lower mainland, err Metro Vancouver. We’re only broadcasting audio, but the set up is a feat of engineering magic. Cables, switches, signals, lines, phones, sweat all over the place simply to broadcast voice over the air.

This week you’ll hear many people asked to repeat themselves. You’ll hear feedback and staticy voices. We don’t want you to hear that, you just will - it’s how it is.

Video on the internet has been around for 10 years or so. Radio has been around for about 100. So why is the internet easier?

Jones Soda is out with their annual publicity stunt: meat flavoured soda.

Joes Christmas Pack

It’s disgusting and brilliant. I would guess every.single.media.outlet in North America will drop them a few lines of copy, a mention, or a full length feature story. I’m writing about it here and I’ll talk about it on air this afternoon.

Do people buy the Christmas Pack or Hannukah Pack because they like to drink Christmas Ham or Latke soda? Probably not, it’s a gag gift, a laugh, a “can you believe they make this” moment.

It’s also a brilliant publicity model for Jones Soda.

I went to the Grand Opening of the new Starlight Casino in New Westminster last night. Don’t let the location scare you - it’s not really in New West, it’s actually just west of the new Queensborough Landing mall.

I’d say it’s more East Richmond than New West, but I’m sure the city of NW is getting the tax benefits and wants to pump up their hamlet as something other than the home for Honduran drug dealers before they hop the SkyTrain and head downtown.

Back to my point .. the new Starlight Casino is GORGEOUS. Very Vegas. The design is cool and modern and sexy. I could see myself sitting in their Red Bar sipping drinks in a slinky suit with friends before wandering off to have another tug on a one-armed bandit. Very nice room.

(BTW, this positive review has nothing to do with the fact I won the first ever poker tournament played their last night. Nahhh.. So let me balance it by saying I will probably never play poker there again since the Gateway Casino Company (they own Starlight) dont allow players to wear headphones. I’m a music guy, need the music, so I’ll stay at the River Rock.)

Last night at the opening, they had assorted body painted models working the room. 6 nice young ladies who had no problem stripping down to 8 square inches of fabric covering their bottoms and spray paint all over their torsos.

Of the 6, 4 were born with it, 2 were bought and paid for. While I felt awkward having topless models wandering a room of mixed company, I did steal a few stares. Real is better. Definitely better. Pert teardrops of beauty as opposed to rigid cones of stone.

Apparently the same goes for Christmas trees. Who knew?

The David Suzuki Foundation is out with a report saying the real trees produce oxygen, are grown locally and are easily recyclable making them a better choice of the Chinese fakes.

I grew up in a real tree household. But just as I have fallen victim to other modern conveniences, I too got frustrated with the dropping needles, the leaning and the mess. I have gone fake and I love it. We snagged the last Chalet Chic tree by Alfred Sung from Zellers back in November and it’s absolutely perfect.

C’mon, it’s just a tree. I’m just glad my Jenner is all real.

Today is day #1 of Nat and Drew’s Food Bank Fillup. Sure, many radio stations do this sort of thing this time of year, but ours is different. Seriously.

Each municipality has its own Food Bank. We all may tell foreigners we live in “Vancouver” when we’re overseas, but really we live in Richmond, or Burnaby or Port Coquitlam. The Vancouver Food Bank gets a lot of the hype, but they’re not the only game in town.

So for this entire week, we’re broadcasting from the following Safeway stores to collect food and cash for each of those communities’ Food Banks.

  • RICHMOND: 6140 Blundell Road (No. 2)
  • SURREY: 7450 - 120th Street (Scott Road North of 72nd Avenue)
  • TRI-CITIES: 3025 Lougheed Hwy, Coquitlam (Just east of Coquitlam Centre)
  • VANCOUVER: 990 West 25th King Edward (King Edward and Oak Street)

This is truly a chance for you to “help your neighbour.”

I’ll be in Richmond this afternoon from 3p-7p. I hope to see you there.
